Chapter 36 - Assignment 2: Median Voters and the 1972 U.S. Presidential Election

Read David Broder's November 8, 1972 Washington Post article entitled: "Nixon Wins Landslide Victory."
  1. Based on this article, does it appear that George McGovern was the choice of the median Democratic voter during the Democratic primaries?
  2. Does it appear that Richard Nixon was the choice of the median Republican voter in the Republican primaries?
  3. The median voter theorem suggests that the winning candidate will generally reflect the preferences of the median voter. This often means that both candidates will take similar positions on many issues. Did this happen in the 1972 Presidential election? Why or why not?
  4. Would the Democrats have been more likely to win if they had selected a candidate who was less liberal? If so, why didn't this occur?
